Note Editore

Cover copy: This new edition of Invasion Ecology provides a comprehensive and updated introduction to all aspects of biological invasion by non-native species. Highlighting important research findings associated with each stage of invasion, the book provides an overview of the invasion process from transportation patterns and causes of establishment success to ecological impacts, invader management, and post-invasion evolution. The authors have produced new chapters on predicting and preventing invasion, managing and eradicating invasive species, and invasion dynamics in a changing climate. Original TIP sheet copy: Modern global trade and travel have led to unprecedented movement of non-native species by humans with unforeseen, interesting, and occasionally devastating consequences. Increasing recognition of the problems associated with invasion has led to a rapid growth in research into the dynamics of non-native species and their adverse effects on native biota and human economies. This book provides a synthesis of this fast growing field of research and is an essential text for undergraduate and graduate students in ecology and conservation management. We propose a second edition to our textbook Invasion Ecology.  This edition will continue to target upper-division undergraduates and beginning graduate students.  This student demographic is presently only served by the first edition of our book, especially those students that are enrolled in a lecture-based invasion ecology course.  Our book covers many basic ecological theories and purposefully situates them within the context of a multi-stage invasion process.  In addition our text has a decidedly applied tone and emphasizes ways of testing the utility of invasion theories using a variety of investigative techniques (e.g., observation, modeling, and experimentation).  While the text is comprehensive, it avoids the recitation of numerous primary literature references and focuses, instead, on case studies and examples of structuring themes with useful seminal papers summarized at the end of each chapter.  This approach avoids mind-numbing detail as well as over-generalization while offering students and instructors easy routes to further investigation.  More importantly, our approach is student and instructor friendly as it helps students understand how to transform their criticisms of ecological theory into testable hypotheses that can be evaluated using a variety of investigative techniques.    Contents The second edition of Invasion Ecology will be divided into 14 chapters.  The first 11 chapters will be the same as in the first edition with the addition of the following: current (i.e. post-2005) references/case studies/examples will be added to each chapter approximately 4-5 additional figures per chapter will be added to increase the books usefulness for academic audiences updated and revised companion papers and further complexities reading suggestions.   In addition to these changes in the first 11 chapters, the new edition will have two major structural changes.  The last chapter of the first edition titled Prediction, Risk Assessment, and Management of Species Invasions will be split into two chapters titled Prediction and Risk Assessment for Prevention and Management of Existing Invasions.  As it stands in the first edition the management chapter is relatively long and conceptually should be split according to what stage in the invasion process we are trying to 'manage'.  Both of these new chapters will be expanded and updated to include the emerging findings in this fast growing area of research.   The final change to the new edition will be a new chapter titled Global Change and Invasive Species.  This area of research was under-covered in the first edition, and has developed extensively since original publication.  Given the topics timeliness, we expect this new chapter will add significant value to the second edition.   Second Edition Table of Contents 1.
