Trama

Developed under the direction of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), this book is part of a series exploring advanced practice globally. It is the first known volume to provide an international view of the advanced practice role of clinical nurse specialist (CNS). It features an in-depth examination of advanced speciality practice in nursing, and the advanced practice role of the clinical CNS. Content includes models of practice, core practice competencies, curricular recommendations, practice outcomes, and regulatory requirements related to scope of practice. 
The CNS role and practice as implemented in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania are examined in the context of the country’s healthcare system, educational traditions and regulatory requirements. Exemplars describe role implementation in various specialty practices and discuss how the role is implemented to advance nursing and improve clinical and fiscal outcomes. Measurement and evaluation of CNS practice in the context of countries and health care systems are examined. 
For practicing CNSs, this book provides an in-depth examination of the role from the global perspective; for administrators it provides a foundational understanding of the CNS role and practice and performance expectations. Autore

Dr. Janet S. Fulton holds a PhD from The Ohio State University, a master’s degree in nursing from University of Cincinnati, and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Mount St. Joseph. She is a tenured full professor and associate dean of graduate programs at Indiana University School of Nursing. Nationally and internationally recognized for her for contributions to advanced practice education, she has directed clinical nurse specialist graduate education programs at two universities. In teaching, she has focused on advancing and modernizing clinical nurse specialist (CNS) education to better prepare graduates for a progressive role in the 21st century healthcare paradigm with its shift to outcomes orientation, interdisciplinary evidence-based practice, and system level leadership. She created an innovation program for distributive education covering rural and urban geographic areas by using technology to increase access. She conducts research related to the clinical nurse specialist role and practice. Dr. Fulton has contributed many publications and presentations influencing CNS curricula and CNS practice competencies and participated in developing national practice competencies and educational guidelines. She has edited and authored books, book chapters and peer reviewed articles promoting scholarly dialogue about CNS education and practice. Two of Dr Fulton’s edited books received the prestigious American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year award in the advanced practice nursing category. A recognized leader in advanced nursing education and practice, she served as a consultant for education nationally and internationally. For 15 years, she has served as the editor-in-chief of Clinical Nurse Specialist: The International Journal for Advanced Nursing Practice, the official journal of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS).

Mr. Vincent Holly holds a master’s degree in nursing and bachelor’s degree in nursing from Indiana University. He has over 10 years of experience as a clinical nurse specialist in the specialty of critical care. His focus is advancing the practice of nursing in the critical care units, within the hospital and within the entire 18 hospital system. He leads the system wide pressure injury prevention team as well as leads efforts to prevent and treat delirium, provide early progressive mobility, early enteral feeding, and sedation practices. He has presented his work on CNS practice issues, regionally and nationally. Mr. Holly has conducted research on alcohol withdrawal assessment tools, pressure injury prevention and feeding tube placement verification. Mr. Holly is the president of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). His role is to advance the unique expertise and value the clinical nurse specialist contributes to health care. He has served on the NACNS board of directors since 2015 as well as serving 6 years on the practice committee. His work as president and board member meets the goals to promote the full scope of practice of the clinical nurse specialist; serve as the national leader for clinical nurse specialist education; promote the benefit the clinical nurse specialist brings to evidenced-based quality care, patient safety, and cost of savings in healthcare delivery; and promote research that evaluates the efficacy and value of clinical nurse specialist interventions and practice.
