Using Classical violin music as her principal laboratory, the author examines how a performance incorporates distinctive features of the performer as well as of the work, and how the listener interprets not only the composer's work and the performer's rendition, but also the performer's and the listener's identities. A richly interdisciplinary approach to a common, yet persistently mysterious, part of our lives.
