Sociologists, political scientists, and area specialists -- nearly half from the region itself -- presented most of the 14 papers at a March 1996 conference in Seattle. Considering central Europe, the Balkans, and successor Soviet states, they discuss such topics as the values and behaviors of organized intolerance, ethnography and body politics relating to women, Germany, Slovakia, Croatia, changing fortunes of the Serbian radical right, Russia, and Ukraine.
