Captain James Cook's three voyages of exploration to the Pacific, 1768-1780, were the first of the great European voyages of discovery to carry professional artists. Cook and his famous colleague on the first voyage, Sir Joseph Banks, on many occasions insisted that a drawing would often provide a better idea of the matter under discussion than mere words would.
