Scholarship Unbound

Scholars of higher education have long recognized that existing reward systems and structures in academic communities do not weigh faculty professional service as they do teaching and research. Complaints about the promotion and tenure system have led many institutions to "mend" their process. A popular modification has been to expand the definition of scholarship used in promotion. This book examines the organizational change process by which four colleges and universities revised their promotion policies to include a broader definition of scholarship and implemented the policies within colleges of education. The book focuses specifically on the assessment of service as scholarship for promotion and tenure.

Examining a number of academic institutions, this book highlights how they have broadened their promotion policies in order to weigh faculty professional service equally with scholarship.
