This book addresses the emerging needs of the aerospace industry by discussing recent developments and future trends of aeronautic materials. It is aimed at advancing existing materials and fostering the ability to develop novel materials with less weight, increased mechanical properties, more functionality, diverse manufacturing methods, and recyclability. The development of novel materials and multifunctional materials has helped to increase efficiency and safety, reduce costs, and decrease the environmental foot print of the aeronautical industry. In this book, integral metallic structures designed by disruptive concepts, including topology optimization and additive manufacturing, are highlighted.

Prof. Pantelakis Spiros, Director of the Laboratory of Technology and Strength of Materials at the University of Patras, Greece, has been the Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics and vice president of the Board of Executives Research Committee. He is one of the founding members and Chairman of the European Aeronautics Science Network (EASN) Association. He has also been Representative of the European Aeronautics Academy in the plenary session of the Advisory Council of Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) and Chairman of ACARE’s Working Group on Human Resources. Since 2015 he is Executive Member of the Board of Directors of Hellenic Aerospace Industries. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Greek Metallurgical Society. Dr. Pantelakis has over 40 years’ experience in the field of materials science and mechanical behavior of materials and structures while he has been involved in more than 90 international aeronautics-related research projects. Dr. Pantelakis is an evaluator of national and international research proposals, member of several editorial boards and a reviewer of articles for several international scientific journals. He is the author of several scientific books, chapters in international textbooks and more than 230 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He has served as chairman of 15 domestic and international conferences and has been a member of the scientific committee of more than 50 international conferences.

Dr. Konstantinos Tserpes is Assistant Professor of Strength of Materials in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics of University of Patras. He has published more than 50 journal papers, more than 60 papers in Conference Proceedings and 3 chapters in international books. He has co-edited two international books, co-authored one Greek book and translated from English to Greek one textbook. He has participated in more than 20 European research projects in the area of aerospace materials and structures. He has co-organized one international Conference and participated in the organizing and scientific committees in more than 10 international Conferences. He is also a peer-reviewer to several scientific journals.
