Paperback with flaps, colour and b&w ill. 8,000 years ago, thanks to his mastery of agriculture and animal breeding, mankind progressively drifted into settled communities. It is the beginning of the Neolithic era, also known as "The New Stone Age", which will last some 3,000 years. The territory of present day Romania saw the birth and development of some twenty different cultures: Vin?a, Hamangia, Gumelni?a, Cucuteni, Cernavod?..., which extended well beyond their birthplaces, thus significantly contributing to the shaping of European identity.
The technique and formal language of the many remains of these cultures, particularly the painted vases and statuettes, is so accomplished that they are in themselves absolute works of art. We believe the great Romanian sculptor Constantin Brâncu?i would agree...
But Romanian Neolithic art was unknown to the general public, no large scale exhibition having ever been consecrated to it, until this private Swiss initiative, with the full support of all administrations and other partners.
