L'insediamento di Lafayette Park a Detroit (costruito nella seconda metà degli anni '50 da Ludwig Hilberseimer e Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, dal paesaggista Alfred Caldwell e dal promotore Herbert Greenwald) costituisce un importante riferimento teorico e progettuale per i temi legati alle forme degli insediamenti, questioni per molti anni abbandonate dalla ricerca architettonica e urbana. The settlement of Lafayette Park in Detroit was built by Ludwig Hilberseimer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, landscape architect Alfred Caldwell, and promoter Herbert Greenwald during the second half of the 1950s. It represents an important theoretical and planning reference regarding the subject of settlement shape, a subject neglected for many years by architectural and urban research. Collaboration between the two German master architects, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Ludwig Hilberseimer, represents a significant chapter for understanding the history of architecture during the Modern Movement and thereafter. The nature of their work and teaching collaboration allows us to identify their respective roles as separate and complementary contributions to the issues of architecture and city planning: the urban studies and the definition of new city models by Hilberseimer and the ability to give architecture exact form on behalf of Mies van der Rohe.
