Argumentative fallacies are errors that lurk in arguments and reasoning. A distracted or unprepared listener often misses them and runs the risk of taking as valid what is actually deceptive. Skilled and malicious persuaders can then exploit the fallacies to prevail in a debate over those arguing in a logical way. But fallacies are not always voluntary: we can fall into a fallacy without realizing it, and in this case we deceive ourselves. So, learning what the fallacies are is important, because it will enable us to check the correctness of our own and others’ arguments and to avoid the traps of manipulators. Unmasking deceptions will be easier and more fun when we know the names of the different types of fallacies and, to an extent, these cards also suggest how to respond to deceptive arguments. All with the humour, simple language and immediacy typical of comics.

Un ascoltatore distratto o impreparato spesso non ci fa caso e rischia di prendere per valido ciò che in realtà è ingannevole. Abili e maliziosi persuasori possono quindi sfruttare le fallacie per prevalere, in una discussione, su chi invece sta argomentando in un modo rispettoso della logica. Ma le fallacie non sono sempre volontarie: è possibile anche incorrere in una fallacia senza rendersene conto, e in questo caso si rischia di ingannare sé stessi. Conoscere le fallacie è quindi importante per controllare la correttezza delle proprie e altrui argomentazioni e per evitare le trappole dei manipolatori. Smascherare gli inganni sarà più facile e divertente conoscendo i nomi dei diversi tipi di fallacie, e nel loro piccolo queste carte vogliono spesso anche suggerire come replicare alle argomentazioni ingannevoli.
