Energy Environment and Development

The relationship between energy and the environment has been the basis of many studies over the years, as has the relationship between energy and development, yet both of these approaches may produce distortions. This is the first book to study all three elements in relation to one another. Disaggregating national populations by income and by how different income groups consume energy, Professor Goldemberg identifies the differences between local, regional and global environmental impacts, and can thus ascertain who is responsible for them. Beginning with an overview of the concepts of energy, as well as economists' views of development, Energy, Environment and Development then goes on to describe current energy-related problems of environmental degradation, looking at their causes and technical solutions. Finally, it discusses general and specific policies to promote sustainable development in energy. Jose Goldemberg is Professor and former Rector of the University of Sao Paulo. He has served as Secretary of State for Science and Technology, and Secretary of the Environment, in Brazil. He has been a Visiting Professor at Princeton University and at the International Academy of the Environment in Geneva. He is the co-author of Energy for a Sustainable World (Wiley Eastern).
