In the nineteen-fifties architects and urban planners looked to India where a new capital was being built. The involvement of a famous avant-garde architect drew their attention: Le Corbusier had been commissioned by the Punjab governement to design a modern city from scratch. Today this urban experiment, shaped by the rigid ideas of Western functionalism, has become a pulsating habitat and home to a million people, while retaining its character of a garden city.
