Throughout the 80s malls became increasingly central to a large swath of the population, both in terms of habits that social life. Aged 20 in 1989, Michael Galinsky drove across America to document these changes defining that era as it began to shift from the shiny excess of the 1980s towards an era of slackers and grunge culture. There is a feeling of claustrophobia emerging from the images - a wall or ceiling is still there to block the horizon. These photos do not focus on any particular detail, creating the feeling that they are stolen and immediate recordings.
