To understand the concept with which sex is regarded by the esoteric philosopher, we must remember that the world known to him is seven times more complex than that known to the exoteric philosopher. For the former, in fact, the physical world is but one of the seven planes of manifestation and the physical phenomena known to us as sensuality are but one aspect of a force acting on all seven planes of manifestation. Esoteric science is already recognising, moreover, that sex also has an emotional aspect as well as a physical one. Exoteric Science states, however, that in addition to those usually recognised, there are also, mental and spiritual aspects and that sexuality manifests in a different form on each plane, functioning according to the Laws of that plane. The scholar of esotericism does not use the word 'sex' as we do, but uses instead, the word 'life force', which he conceives of as a radiant and magnetic vibratory energy, similar to electricity. The life force is a force that we must regard as sacred. The individual through whom this force manifests itself must, therefore, regard it as a sacred storehouse, which it is up to him to administer, according to the purposes of divine Life itself. This life force is that which keeps all that is in existence, preserving the living forces from the disintegrating forces that constantly tend to return every specialised substance to its primitive condition. The first function of the life force is precisely to keep that which has form in manifestation and to maintain it at the level reached through evolution; it is known as 'Preserving Life' and is conceived as a unity. However, it also has a second task: the creation of new forms and, to do this, it must function in polarity as a duality, with a positive and a negative aspect. And it is to this phase of life activity that the esoteric concept of sex refers. For the maintenance of life, one force is sufficient, but for any form of creation, two forces are needed, one of which tends to expand to a state of equilibrium, while the other is inert, potential and awaiting a stimulus. The latter would be the feminine form, while the former, which would be the masculine force, can be compared to the electric spark that releases the latent energy of the feminine form. The esoteric scholar calls these two forces: positive and negative, masculine and feminine. The positive, or masculine force, is the stimulus; the negative, or feminine force, by means of its latent energy, does the actual work of creation under the influence of the masculine stimulus, becoming immediately powerless again when the impulse of that stimulus ceases. Whenever, such action and reaction occurs, whether in the mineral realm or in the world of thought.
