Long service in the navy had imparted to an otherwise pleas ing address an appearance of sternness — increased, doubtless, by the gravity of the situation. The habit of command sat easily upon him, and the control which he speedily acquired over his men increased to veneration as events, crowding rapidly upon each other, 'brought into requisition the qualities of patience, courage, and discipline, with which he was eminently endowed.
