21st International Poster and Graphic Arts - Festival of Chaumont - The 1917 Russian revolution was built with symbols. The Bolsheviks who took power under the red flag, adopted the army’s red star, and united workers and peasants in the sign of the hammer and the sickle. A semi-literate society was to be transformed through symbols, mages, slogans and texts. The chief medium was the poster.
