Fotografo, collezionista e scrittore, Peter Beard ha trasformato la sua vita in un'opera d'arte; i diari illustrati che ha tenuto fin da giovanissimo sono poi divenuti spunto per una vera e propria carriera e gli hanno valso la reputazione di grande artista. E' stato ritratto da Francis Bacon e Andy Warhol ha contribuito alla stesura dei suoi diari.; è stato in tourné con Truman Capote e i Rolling Stones e ha scritto libri con la Onassis e Mick Jagger. Come artista è sempre stato innamorato della natura selvaggia e nei primi anni sessanta si trasferì a vivere in Kenya. Fu così testimone del boom demografico di quella regione che portò ad uno sfruttamento delle risorse e un grave danno alla fauna locale-pensiamo per esempio agli elefanti di Tsavo morti di fame in un territorio depredato dei suoi alberi. Così prese a documentare quello che vedeva con diari, fotografie e collages.
