Azerbaijan's oil is the major strategic resource of the Caucasus region, and the politics of oil transportation is highly instrumental in influencing the many complicated international and inter-ethnic tensions in the region, sometimes exacerbating the tensions, and at other times initiating good relations and co-operation.

Dr Emmanuel Karagiannis has taught international politics at the University of Hull where he obtained his Doctorate in 1999, and is now a political and security analyst specializing in the Black Sea and the Caucasus regions.
