While Tübingen theologian Eberhard Jüngel’s theology remains broadly influential in Continental Europe, his work has largely been overlooked by Anglo-American readers interested in modern Protestantism. There are, however, signs that this trend is changing, as several dissertations, specialist monographs, and popular blog-sites have appeared recently that are devoted to Jüngel’s thought. There is thus a growing audience for the proposed study, which will be the first up-to-date, English-language, general introduction to Jüngel’s theology to appear in three decades. Nelson offers an interpretation of Jüngel’s theology that is unique.

AUTORE

Dr. R. David Nelson earned his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology at King’s College, University of Aberdeen. His doctoral dissertation, supervised by Prof. John B. Webster, is a groundbreaking analysis of the sacramental theology of Eberhard Jüngel. A revised edition of this work is being prepared for publication under the title The Interruptive Word: Eberhard Jüngel on the Structure of God’s Sacramental Relation to the World. While researching for this volume, he spent one year as a Doctoral Fellow at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, France, where he participated in several Lutheran international ecumenical efforts. Nelson has taught undergraduate courses in biblical studies and systematic theology at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama, and Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Since January 2012, Nelson has served as Acquisitions Editor at Baker Academic & Brazos Press, where he specializes in acquiring publications in systematic theology, historical theology, hermeneutics, and theological ethics. His current research agenda includes projects in the areas of 20th century Lutheran dogmatics, the theology of Eberhard Jüngel, and modern ecumenism. He has been contracted by T&T Clark/Continuum to co-author the volume Ecumenism: A Guide for the Perplexed with Charles Raith II of Baylor University.
