The revival of right-wing extremism in post-Cold war Europe has created considerable concern, even consternation, on both sides of the Atlantic. The spectre of far-right political parties, headed by seemingly charismatic leaders, challenging for power in parliaments while far-right youth gangs attack gypsies, immigrants and asylum-seekers in the streets, has come to haunt many people worried about the future of the Western democracies.
