This book brings together a selection of best papers from The International Conference on Water and Flood Management, Bangladesh, 2021.  The book chapters are based on contributions from multidisciplinary fields, such as nature-based solutions, hydro-meteorological forecasting, river restoration, coastal risk, episodic natural hazards, water risk and resilience, climate-resilient infrastructure, blue economy, and water management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With changing physical and socioeconomic risks due to changes in climate and anthropogenic interventions, integrated approaches to analyzing these processes and their interactions, along with integrating nature-based solutions, are gaining traction. With this special focus on science, policy, and practice to ensure sustainability in the water sector, the conference provided a platform for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to exchange their knowledge and experience.

G M Tarekul Islam is a Professor at the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He graduated in Civil Engineering in 1994; did his Master’s in Water Resources Engineering in 1996 from BUET and Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo,  Japan in 2000. He was also a recipient of the prestigious JSPS fellowship to pursue post-doctoral research at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Hiroshima University, Japan during 2006-2008. He was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Disaster Risk Management and Sustainable Development of Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia in 2011 where he immensely contributed to updating and developing new course curricula for introducing a Master's program in Disaster Risk Reduction under the sponsorship of UNDP. He was an adjunct faculty of the Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies of Dhaka University; Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Islamic University of Technology; and Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Environmental, Water Resources and Coastal Engineering of the Military Institute of Science and Technology. He was awarded by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh as the best researcher in Engineering and Technology category in 2003. He has taken part in 23 research projects as a Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator. He has rendered many consultancy and advisory services to nationally important projects of different government and non-government organizations. He has imparted numerous talks on various issues of water and flood management as an invited speaker. He has published over 130 papers in international journals and conference proceedings.

Dr. Shampa is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).  Her academic interests include basic Computational Fluid Dynamics, Sediment Transport, and Remote Sensing. In her Ph.D., she developed a finite volume multiphase three-dimensional numerical model for turbulent flow applicable to permeable hydraulic structures. In ICWFM-2021 she served as co-organizing secretary, reviewer, and one of the editors of this book.

Ahmed Ishtiaque Amin Chowdhury is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh. He has completed BSc in Civil Engineering from the same university, and MESc and PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. His research interests include groundwater and contaminant transport, nano-particles, ISCO and ISCR-based soil and groundwater remediation technologies, surface water quality etc. He teaches a number of graduate courses at the institute. He has served as the Organizing Secretary and Co-Organizing Secretary for the International Conference on Water and Flood Management-2019 and 2021, respectively.
