Chapter 1 Introduction; Chapter 2 Titus Andronicus, 1593?]1Although there is evidence to date Titus Andronicus in 1593–4, a general belief that it should be Shakespeare’s earliest play has led to arguments for an earlier date. I shall argue that it is close to Lucrece in poetic as well as in Ovidian reference, and see no reason why it should not have been also close in time. But see J. C.
