Note Editore

First published in 1987 this book looks at root development and functions. Besides affecting the development of roots directly, the physical environment also influences the organisms associated with roots and thus affects their function. The papers presented in this volume pay equal attention to root development and root function in relation to the whole range of environmental factors including temperature, light, water, aeration, gravity and the mechanical strength of the soil. Consideration is also given to the effects of some of these factors on mycorrhizae and nitrogen-fixing bacteria. The final chapter reviews some of the main themes raised in the volume and indicates the way that research at the cellular and tissue levels may progress in the future.

Sommario

1. The cellular organization of roots and its response to the physical environment P.W. Barlow; 2. Functional aspects of cells in root apices W. J. Lucas; 4. Selected aspects of the structure and development of field-grown roots with special reference to maize Margaret E. McCully; 5. Function of root tissues in nutrient and water transport M. C. Drew; 6. Origin, branching and distribution of root systems Betty Klepper; 7. Growth, respiration, exudation and symbiotic associations: the fate of carbon translocated to the roots H. Lambers; 8. Development and growth of root systems in plant communities P. J. Gregory; 9. Competition between root systems in natural communities M. M. Caldwell; 10. Response of roots to the physical environment: goals for future research P. J. C. Kuiper.
