Free Space Optical Network is a next generation communication network which uses optical waves instead of microwaves potentially offering faster communication with ultra band width, meaning more complex communication services can be simultaneously offered.    The technology has been discussed for quite some time, and has shown continuous development; however, some obstacles have been creating bottle neck in order to materialize the technology, such as hardware and security issues. This book describes the network concepts in simple language starting with point-to-point free space optics basics and develop the discussion into networking, interoperability with existing communication network, and security using simple language suitable for both communication professionals who are just getting into free space optical communication field and graduate students who majors optical communications.   The book will serve as a road-map to implement free space optical networks, and the author plans to review and update the contents in three year interval.

This book provides a comprehensive description of an optical communications technology known as free space optical--a next-generation communications network that uses optical signals through the atmosphere instead of fiber, RF, or microwaves.
