This textbook teaches the fundamentals of calculus, keeping points clear, succinct and focused, with plenty of diagrams and practice but relatively few words. It assumes a very basic knowledge but revises the key prerequisites before moving on. Definitions are highlighted for easy understanding and reference, and worked examples illustrate the explanations. Chapters are interwoven with exercises, whilst each chapter also ends with a comprehensive set of exercises, with answers in the back of the book. Introductory paragraphs describe the real-world application of each topic, and also include briefly where relevant any interesting historical facts about the development of the mathematical subject.
This text is intended for undergraduate students in engineering taking a course in calculus. It works for the Foundation and 1st year levels. It has a companion volume Foundation Algebra.
Dr Gajjar joined The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) as Senior Tutor in Maths and Computer Science at the Centre for English Language Education (CELE) in March 2013, having previously worked as Mathematics Coordinator at the UCL Centre for Preparatory Studies in Astana, Kazakhstan. During 2005-2009 he also worked at the UK campus of the University of Nottingham as Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, where he taught students in Honours Mathematics and Service Teaching from Foundation Year, to Qualifying Year and Second Year. In addition to working in the UK, China and Kazakhstan, Dr Gajjar has worked in India for over 14 years, which includes a Lectureship at the National Institute of Technology.
With an academic career spanning over 27 years, Dr Gajjar has taught a number of modules ranging from Foundation, to Masters level in Mathematics and Computer Science. He also delivered research talks at ICTP, Italy, and at International Conference on Fuzzy Computation in Madeira, Portugal.
He has been a recipient of EPSRC-funded ‘Bridging the Gaps Award’ in the year 2007 while working at the University of Nottingham UK, and UNNC funded ‘Small Teaching & Learning Development Grant’ for the year 2017–2018.
