L'arte fotografica di James O'Mara può essere avvicinata in vari modi, tanti quanta è la poesia che vi abita. "Cerco di andare incontro a ogni avventura come se si trattasse di una danza", dice l'autore del suo lavoro. "Ho bisogno di quella pulsazione, di quel ritmo". E infatti nelle sue immagini oltre al momento catturato dalla lente si riesce a percepire sempre un prima e un dopo. Risiede in lui la capacità di cogliere il dinamismo, anche in soggetti perfettamente immobili, il momento effimero, immediato in cui un personaggio rivela la propria natura o un evento svela nuovi significati. Dice del suo lavoro lo scrittore William Gibson: "Spesso le sue immagini sono straordinariamente belle, ma non sono mai solo quello. Ancorate a un confortevole senso di umanità, il loro e quello del fotografo, regalano bagliori di vita vista attraverso un occhio più consapevole, e una lettura più poetica dei giochi della luce". Il volume, di grande formato, permette di fruire nel migliore dei modi degli scatti dell'autore, che coprono circa 50 anni di attività, dalle rock star di fine anni sessanta (Jim Morrison, Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Joni Mitchell, Carole King), ai ritratti più recenti di personaggi famosi e non, ai momenti di vita quotidiana nelle amate Vancouver, Tucson, Los Angeles, Parigi, e naturalmente in Toscana.

Discussing his work, O'Mara says, "I try to approach every adventure in life as if it were a dance. I need that pulse, that rhythm." In fact, in his pictures we can perceive not only the moment captured by the camera lens, but also a 'before' and an 'after'.He has the ability to grasp the dynamism of the scene, even in perfectly still subjects: the ephemeral moment, the instant in which a figure reveals his or her nature, or events show new meanings.As the writer William Gibson says about his work, Often their images are extraordinarily beautiful, but never merely so.
