The works with living animals came out of the two tendencies that have been dominant in Braco Dimitrijevic’s work right from the beginning. Simultaneously to exhibiting in galleries and museums, Dimitrijevic, a pioneer of art in public space, appropriated urban space as a privileged arena of his artistic activity and intervened in various non-art sites. The second tendency, present from the mid 1970s in his work, is an intention to naturalize culture by making unexpected encounters between artworks and natural elements. “[...] Dimitrijevic’s body of work proposes the artist as amateur historian, philosopher, scientist, storyteller and strategist whose investigative spirit reaches beyond the confines of any medium or style. He brings to light fresh insights, drawing connections between things previously thought to be disparate; viewing things, as it were, from the moon” (Sue Kramer, critic).
