When you read the ancient history of the Jewish people, you feel that their story is not a simple one made up by people describing ghosts. You have the feeling that everything is not over yet, that there is more to come. The story is too cohesive, it has a core, so that you cannot think that it is just an interesting narrative, a banal history.
