Note Editore

This book defines cancer as a metabolic disease rather than as a genetic disease. The origin of the disease is reevaluated in light of older and newer information on defects in tumor cell energy metabolism.  The somatic mutation theory cannot account for the origin of cancer.  The view of cancer as a genetic disease is no longer credible and has been largely responsible for the failure to develop cost-effective therapies.  A metabolic origin of cancer can accommodate all aspects of the disease including, inflammation, vascularization, cell death, drug resistance, and genomic instability.  Significant attention is given to the origin of metastasis or the spread of cancer cells, which is the single most deadly aspect of the disease.  New treatment strategies that target tumor cell energy metabolism are discussed.  Prevention is viewed in light of the metabolic origin of cancer.  Finally, case studies and perspectives that treat cancer as a metabolic disease are presented from physicians, patients, and care givers.  The main points are supported by evidence from over 1000 scientific studies.  Tables, figures, and graphs are included to emphasize key issues.

Sommario

The book addresses controversies related to the origins of cancer and provides solutions to cancer management and prevention. It expands upon Otto Warburg's well-known theory that all cancer is a disease of energy metabolism.  However, Warburg did not link his theory to the "hallmarks of cancer" and thus his theory was discredited.  This book aims to provide evidence, through case studies, that cancer is primarily a metabolic disease requring metabolic solutions for its management and prevention.  Support for this position is derived from critical assessment of current cancer theories.  Brain cancer case studies are presented as a proof of principle for metabolic solutions to disease management, but similarities are drawn to other types of cancer, including breast and colon, due to the same cellular mutations that they demonstrate.
